Amazon's AI strategy

Amazon approaches AI primarily through AWS, its US$100 billion-revenue cloud-computing arm, which is the largest cloud provider in the world. AWS's AI strategy combines first-party models, third-party model hosting, and proprietary silicon.

Amazon Bedrock

Launched in 2023, Amazon Bedrock is a managed service offering API access to foundation models from Anthropic, Meta, Mistral, Cohere, AI21, Stability AI, and Amazon's own Nova family. Bedrock is positioned as the AWS-native alternative to OpenAI's API.

Amazon Nova

In December 2024, Amazon launched Nova, its own foundation-model family:

  • Nova Micro / Lite / Pro / Premier — text-only tiers
  • Nova Canvas — image generation
  • Nova Reel — video generation
  • Nova 2 Pro (2026) — current flagship with 1M-token context

Anthropic partnership

Amazon has invested up to US$8 billion in Anthropic, making it Anthropic's primary cloud provider. Claude models run on AWS Trainium chips.

Custom silicon

AWS has invested heavily in vertically integrated AI hardware:

  • Trainium — training accelerator (2nd generation in 2025)
  • Inferentia — inference accelerator
  • Graviton — Arm-based general-purpose CPU
